WTF is a bed jacket?

The girlfriend just showed me what she bought herself today. It looked like a fairly nice dressing-gown until I realised it was only half-length. Apparently it's a half-sized dressing-gown for wearing whilst sat up in bed.

 

Now...

 

Why sit up in bed? Why not pull up the duvet? What about pyjama tops? How about sitting on a full-sized dressing-gown - or maybe pulled up round the waist?
