Ouch.

Apparently there are some around that use it for internal and external comms.

I haven't ever seen twitter so was hoping somebody could tell me about it's use without having to get involved

Evaluated all sorts of instant messenger applications, etc and various communication tools in a complete re-think of strategy a couple of years back in the company I was in then. Twitter wasn't even on the table, but we did draw the obvious conclusion that whatever we used had to have a facility for logging conversations on servers we owned or owned the access to.

We have Microsoft Office Communicator in our current place. It does exactly what we want communication wise (including video calls when the client is setup for it) and we control the logs.

I know we didn't do an evaluation of Skype and Twitter, but they do fall under the "external systems" negative column.

Yeah fair point - for us it isn't that significant though as we're a consultancy so we're distributed. Plus we're small so we don't have a huge (or any really :D) internal IT function.

Did you look at the external comms angle at all?

Yep. The app we ended up with let you use yahoo messenger, msn and AIM (a couple of others too), but controlled logging centrally. Our traders used Yahoo Messenger for communicating with other people in other companies so it was important we had a record. We made the client part of our standard build so we were covered when they were out of the office on the VPN too.

I've never looked at VoIP on anything but company only WANS and LANS though.

A company that I was contracting at recently was using Yammer which is a kind of corporate, closed version of twitter. Same idea as twitter but allows users to mention company confidential info.

Developers at our place use this.

Used to work at a telecomms company that used Skype for all IM and teleconferencing.

I've rejected Skype for use with the company I work for due to security issues. Because they insist on using end user's PC's as gateways for VoIP transmission its not advisable if you're making calls that may contain sensitive information.

that's quite interesting to hear, because the communications industry can't get enough of new apps like skype and twitter. and nobody ever mentions sensitive information being an issue.

When you have to record all voice and IM conversations for audit purposes Skype and Twitter are pretty much out of the question.
