Off up to Liverpool from London the weekend after next, for a long weekend of lash.I'm looking for some good places to go out on Saturday and also some good food.Any type of food is good, but if theres any particularly good Indians that'd be a must-do at some stage. Any ideas folks?

The less well known development on Duke street (near Chinatown) has some really nice places.

Sapporo Teppanyaki is absolutely brilliant. My favourite restaurant in town easy. One of them places where the chefs cook the food on your table

Video here.

Il Forno is next door which is less impressive but still might be worth a visit. An italian obviously, the pizza's are great and they've got a massive open oven as a centrepiece, which is cool. Not overly cheap though, and some of the pasta dishes are on the small side so are poor value for money (but still lovely). For some reason it's always noisy as well.

then there's the obvious alma de cuba, la vina blah blah blah

For Indian food try the follwing:

Maharaja

Two minutes' walk from Lime Street station, Maharaja is a real find. One of only a handful of southern Indian restaurants in the north of England, its business lunch - £6.95 for a selection of four small curries, rice, Malabar paratha bread and dessert (rice pudding, say) - is, arguably, Liverpool's best bargain. The food, typical of India's coastal Kerala region, is light (everything is cooked in water, not oil), sensitively seasoned, with fresh, zingy herbs and spices, and full of long, lip-smacking flavours. With a diet Coke (£1.10) or two, it's a little culinary adventure for under a tenner. Hospitable staff, too.

• Business lunch £6.95. 34-36 London Road, +44 (0)151 709 2006; maharajaliverpool.co.uk

Gotta have the fish if you're having malabar cuisine.

  • 3 weeks later...

Had a great time, spent Saturday night at Alma De Cuba and some other place that played a lot of The Specials.

Sunday, went to Vodka Revolutions down in Matthew St,then onto the Cavern Club and Pub,followed by the only place that was open late after that-Smokey Joes or somewhere?

Ridiculously touristy down Matthew St,but was a good laugh nonetheless.

Enjoyed Zelig's,and some other American Diner style place in Liverpool 1.

The liver hurt like hell on the train back home.

Great weekend.

That's the place-good grub actually although perhaps a little bit steep.

I can't remember the name of the other bar we went to on Saturday, playing Specials music all night long.Terrific.Better than the Cuban place which, although I enjoyed, was far too rammed. The dancers were a good touch though.

She complained why i hadn't taken her there before...

Remember taking some of the Leverkusen fans in there and then said it's a bad place as there's bllod all over the toilets. A few specks and they were worried.

Disliked that. Expensive and not great quality.

Should have gone cafe sports express for their fish and chips, they do a brilliant fish

Been to Dinomat a few times now... you are right about the price, but have enjoyed the food each time. They do a great Milkshake..

the price does seem to put alot of people off as its always empty.

I recommend the Pulled Pork and Spicy Bean platter
