Connecting Laptop to TV

I have downloaded movies to my laptop (all very innocent) and am trying to watch them on my TV. I have the VGA cable connected from laptop to TV but all that comes up on the TV screen is my laptops wallpaper. None of my dektop icons or anything. Im pretty sure i am doing something boneheaded. Any ideas?
