Goals from Midfield

Apart from Gerrard our lack of goals from the remaining midfielders really hurts us. Alonso, Lucas, Mascherano and Sissoko will probably be lucky to net 5 between them in a season. There is also a lack of creativity through the middle when Gerrard is out. It's almsot like we have to many players who are very similar. Are we too reliant on Stevie and does Rafa need to find more firepower and creativity from the heart of our midfield?

In the (regrettably) few games when Alonso has been paired with Mascherano in midfield, I think he's got forward pretty well.

 

We saw it last season at home to Chelsea in the CL semi (Kuyt's disallowed goal) and Charlton in the league, as well as in Athens (his 1st half chance). He also bagged a brace against Derby this season.

2003/04 14 goals

2004/05 13 goals

2006/07 7 goals

 

2005/06 and this season he was injured for long periods of time. That's more goals than our CM (Gerrard excepted) will ever score combined. Not as redundant as you may suggest.
