Guest RedIsMyColour Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Gone are the days of Traore, Biscan, Diao, Cheyrou. Last season we had Zenden and Gonzalez who were liabilities. Riise gets some stick but he's steady and can do a decent job. There aren't any players that totally do my head in when I see their name on the team sheet.
honourablegeorge Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Yeah, I said something similar last year - there was nobody left that I really hated. We have steadily improved, but you coud still pick three or four big problems in the squad, and they're not new problems either.
Gunga Din Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 people were saying we had no really poor players when we had the likes of Biscan, Traore, Diao and Cheyrou, and they were saying then we had no poorplayers like when we used to have Dicks and Ruddock etc. there are poor players in our squad, Riise is poor, and with the best will in the world, when some of our current criop leave, people will say they were poor players, players like Pennant, Kuyt, Sissoko etc might be candidates for that
Guest RedIsMyColour Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Pennant, Kuyt and Sissoko are a step up form Cheyrou, Diao and Diouf.
honourablegeorge Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Riise, Pennant, Kuyt & Sissoko are by no means bad players, though. Not up to the standard we're aiming for, granted, but still players that we can fully expect to receive decent fees for, as opposed to the Cheyrous & Diaos of this world that we barely manage to loan out. a sign progress, rather than a sign that the job's finished.

I agree with that. We need some better players for starting places. Squad core wise its good. We are just missing a few top class players for the starting line up. The mancs have O'Shea, Fletcher, Dong etc who wouldn't get a game for us.

What you on about You are never going to have a squad with all top class players, its common sense.
Guest RedIsMyColour Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Zenden was hardly a "liability". He was rubbish.
Jim Price Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Zenden, whilst not my favourite, would be a better bet than Leto who I think is a "squad" player in the same way as Zenden was.
Guest Ant Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Zenden wasn't rubbish, he is just the scape goat for everything like Riise is now.

I'm happy to say those four (Kuyt a possible exception) aren't good enough, but they'll do a half decent job until we have better. A lot of pople would argue a case for some or all of those four too. You'd have been hard pushed to find someone backing Cheyrou or Diao. Wasn't me above saying Gonzalez was a bad player, but he was deffo a disappointment to most people, there were some high hopes for him but he was too raw to fulfill them. Was a mite surprised he was moved on so quickly, to be honest - thought he'd have gotten another season. Edited November 21, 2007 by honourablegeorge

johngibo YPC Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Zenden wasn't rubbish, he is just the scape goat for everything like Riise is now. he didn't offer alot, and had very few good gamesI never thought Gonzalez looked like a player either for what its worth I agree that we don't have any bad players now. Just need one or two more real top quality ones

Leto has youth on hsi side, though. He'll hopefully get better. Zenden was on the downward path when he arrived.

Gunga Din Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 (edited) Anyone who thinks Pennant is a "poor player" is clearly criminally insane anyone who thought Gonzalez would be sold in the summer was also i think deemed criminally insane by you, and if Rafa sold him then i think your quote was "that would make him a kneejerk twot" and i never actually said Pennant was poor. honourablegeorge Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Anyone who thinks Pennant is a "poor player" is clearly criminally insane I don't think Pennant is a "poor" player. I think he's an average player who can do a job, but isn't up to the standard we're aiming for.
sutty Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Gonzalez was the slowest really fast player I have ever seen.
cymrococh Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Gonzalez was the slowest really fast player I have ever seen.I'd hate to see the worst player in Chile.
Guest RedIsMyColour Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Is Salas still playing? He was a good Chilean.
