We have a very good team but not a title winning one.

 

In terms of quality players manure the a*** and chelski possess more technically-gifted creative players.

Still too weak on the flanks for me.

 

Pennant not good enough imo

Kewell never fit

Riise not good enough

Babel - not an out and out winger but might be able to do a job

Aurelio - jury still out for me not sure he's good enough defensively

Benayoun - good impact player but only really effective coming inside

Arsenal has never had any genuine flankers, they rely on their full backs getting forward to give them width. Even during Pires' prime, he prefered to cut inside

It might sound clichéd but we still lack another 2 match winners.

 

We have Gerrard and Torres in that bracket. UTD have Ronaldo, Tevez, Rooney and Scholes, Giggs to a lesser extent.

 

Babel could develop to be one for us. I still feel we need 2 very good wingers/talented side midfielders and an attacking left back.

They play a far more fluent passing game than us though without the need to rely on wingers to beat their men. Hleb is actually pretty good as well this season.

gerrard could and possibly should play right mid until we get someone better tho...

fact is, the reason for our dropped points is the players are just playing badly, its not because they aren't good enough for the opposition they are facing.

should we/shouldn't we have a signed a top class winger is a moot point (i believe we should have) when you look at the performances lately - as with or without a winger or two we should have won all the games we've played with the team put out. (barring marseilles perhaps). then we would and should have been up next to arsenal.

to take it further, are we able to beat chelsea arsenal or manu without the aforementioned top winger? yes we are. we can beat anyone in this league if we play well, we do have a very good side. like wise, we can get beaten if we play s*** - a winger wont change that.

a top winger would give us more options and probably make us a lot easier on the eye than we are at the mo, but our problem right now is that 80% of the team are playing like dogs and well below their true level.

Btw Mike I agree with what you said but Rafa is what makes the difference against most teams. Tactically he can beat anyone. He's proved it plenty of times. Over the course of the season though we need something extra and a major part of that is a winger.
