PM Gordon Brown's idea for a 'national motto' has struck a chord with the Great British public - but not in the way he was hoping.

The premier encouraged a debate after using his old school motto Usque Conabor (I Will Try My Utmost) in a recent speech.

But a survey of 3,000 Brits revealed that 44 per cent consider the concept of a national slogan ''silly'' - as their own suggestions prove.

The poll, by global market research company onepoll.com, offered people 30 possible sayings.

And although the number one choice was a serious one - 'Queen, Country and Unity' - most folk opted for wacky ones.

Runner-up was 'Smile - You're on CCTV'. Other popular mottoes included 'Britain - At Least It's Not France' and 'We Love Tea'.

Top 10 slogans

1. Queen, Country and Unity

2. Smile - You're on CCTV

3. Togetherness Through Diversity; Unity Through Variety

4. We Love Tea

5. It Never Rains But It Pours

6. God Help Us

7. Great Britain - Because We're Worth It

8. Britain - At Least It's Not France

9. With Honour, With Justice, With Chips

10. We Welcome One and All

And folk didn't hold back when asked to put forward their own suggestions.

They included:

* Come Here and Take the P*** - Everyone Else Does

* The Easiest Welfare System in the World

* Queue Here

* GB: A Nice Little Earner

* Come On In - It's Free!

Onepoll spokesman John Sewell said: ''I don't think these slogans were really what the PM had in mind.

''But one thing's clear from the poll - the Great British public may not need a slogan but they have a great sense of humour.''
