Apochryphal tale blown out of the water.

Went to see my mate Richard in hospital last week; he's come down with a problem with his pancreas, anyway, he tells me this story he SWEARS is true!

The ubiquitous "mate of a mate" (who he can't actually name) is a sergeant in the army and came home from a tour of Iraq last week. With his bonus, he decides he's going to treat his wife as a surprise and books the Penthouse suite of the new Hilton Hotel in Manchester with a £1000 deposit. Two weeks' ago, he gets a phone call from the hotel saying that unfortunately he's been double-booked and would he consider changing etc? Soldier goes ballistic telling them he's just returning from Iraq putting life on the line etc and there's no way he's changing dates. They offer him all sorts of inducements; free stay in the Penthouse the following week; thousands of air miles; free air travel, the guy's having none of it. He's been looking forward to this for a long long time and there's no way he's changing for anyone. Get the other guy to change etc. Anyway, the hotel tell him they'll look into it and phone him back. They do so with a strange question; "how much is your outstanding mortgage, sir?" He tells them it's £85,000. The following day, there's a letter on his doormat which he opens and finds a cheque inside for.....£85,000 signed? David Beckham! He then goes on to tell me "It's 'cos of Neville's wedding you see!" as though it's case closed.

Only thing wrong with this story, mate, David Beckham wasn't at the wedding as he is in Spain waiting to play for his football team tonight. Whooops!
