I was standing at the junction of 40th & 6th Ave & a bus came blundering past.

In one of those 'time goes in slow-motion' episodes, I thought there was something unusual. I imagined the side of the bus smeared in blood. But it wasn't.

As the bus got across the junction & was continuing on its course, I heard the screams. They were of a woman & shrill & panicked. The bus pulled over. The woman next to me, looked to the left - where the screaming was coming from & the shock on her face was something else. She looked like she was going to throw, then covered her face with her hands, said "Oh my god", and looked like she didn't know what to do. Eventually she walked away in the opposite direction.

The lights were on cross & people started crossing the road. All the while the screaming continued - not changing, chilling to the bone. At the same time, people were flocking towards the screams - to see what had happened. I could see the shock on people's faces who were crossing, as they had to look that was - a) it's the direction the traffic was coming from & b) that's where the screaming was coming from.

In the end - probably only 10 secs - I said to the mate I was with, "we can't do anything to help" - there were loads of people by then. Cowards way out, I know, but I'm not a doc, nor 1st aid trained, so I would be of no use. We needed to cross at that jcn, but that meant looking into the traffic & at whatever the scene was to cross; so we walked a couple of blocks away to cross. When we did cross, we saw that first woman, still with her hands over her face & shaking her head.

I don't know what happened, even now. Whether the screams were from the person hit by the bus, or someone with the person, or next to them; but even by not seeing it, it's really in my head.
