Probate/Inheritence/Will question

Anyone here had to apply for Probate to become executor of an estate?

 

Specifically, where there is no property involved. I'm trying to fill in the forms concerning me arl Ma but seem to have hit a catch-22. There is no will and loads of incomplete information and some assets I am certain are so far unaccounted for. It seems, though, that I have to estimate the assets for the HM Customs and Excise when applying for Probate, yet I can't find out what the assets are (only know what was in the bank account - nobody can tell me the exact amounts in pension funds, for example) til I have been named as the executor. And it appears that I won't be made executor until I can show what the assets are. I'm in a nark now, obviously, but you get the drift.

 

Has anyone else been through this stuff and point out where I am going wrong?

 

I really don't want to have to take on a solicitor but this is causing a ridiculous amount of unwelcome stress trying to follow all of this stuff through.
