wireless connection

I've just had Sky installed (after Virgin f*cked me around) and got the broadband option for the maximum speed.

 

However, the speed on the wireless network fluctuates between 1.0Mbps to 24Mbps and sometimes up to 54. This can't be because of the contention ratio and it's starting to p*ss me off. Is there anything I can do to improve the consistency and speed- I'm looking ta using DrTCP but I'm concerned that may f*ck it all up.
