Regional Accents on songs

Listening to Radio 1 on my DAB this afternoon and it seems to be quite 'the thing' for regional accents (Mainly Cockney - but one slightly Scottish one) to be very evident.

 

Interesting that once upon a time it was 'done' to seem to try and hide your accent when you sang..

 

Obviously that hasn't been the case for many a singer (Billy Bragg, the Proclaimers, Blur etc. etc.) - but it seems to be around more now than it once was..?
