baja the hut Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 (edited) Steve Finnan, I will start with he is a tidy right back who can do more than a job defensively, is a good crosser and is very good positionally most of the time. But he is very very VERY frustrating when we get behind. He isn't a great left back simply because he is way too cautious in the attacking third.... How many times have we seen him move into a decent position and pass the ball back, these little balls back to someone near the half are excruciating, they alleviate any pressure that we build and offer a possibility for a counter attack at times. I think he really needs to find more bite down the flank, we cannot be a league winning team if we don't have top attacking fullbacks. You saw how good we were after Riise went off and FA came on, we need a good attacking fullback down the right as well..... I await the taunts... Edited January 6, 2007 by baja the hut
crisps Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Nope, I agree, he is a steady premiership right back... nothing special, he gets a few assists due to being a decent crosser but hardly ever scores and gets caught out of position loads... and often out muscled... definitely a position that needs looking it sooner rathe than later...
floyd Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 (edited) Steve Finnan, Is he the seventh or eighth player weve had a go at now??At ths rate we'll soon get to Chris Lawler and Alec Lindsay Edited January 6, 2007 by floyd
CarraLegend Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 we cannot be a league winning team if we don't have top attacking fullbacks. That whole post is a crock of s**** and this bit is laughable. You'll probably want to check who's won the last 2 titles softlad.
Chili Palmer Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Rubbish, you need solid players in any team, he is never going to do anything spectactular but thats not part of his job. Our best right back since Neal.
baja the hut Posted January 6, 2007 Author Posted January 6, 2007 Is he the seventh or eighth player weve had a go at now??At ths rate we'll soon get to Chris Lawler and Alec Lindsay Oh look at me (floyd) coming to the support of the team when the naysayer comes to browbeat them! Give it a rest, they were utter rubbish, it's our right to have a go.....i didn't say anything too bad did I.....
jimmylibel Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Is he the seventh or eighth player weve had a go at now??At ths rate we'll soon get to Chris Lawler and Alec Lindsay I think Finnan is liked by this forum because there are very few, if any, full backs better than him. He is defensively solid and while he might not be much use at skinning opposing full backs he is effective in getting good crosses in and choosing the right options. He makes effective and clever use of the ball in most attacking situations.

CarraLegend Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Well we don't have the abundance of quality and depth they do..... So shut up then.
Atticus Finch Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Depends what you look for in your full backs. Personally I prefer dependable, good defenders and therefore rate Finnan. The only criticism of him I would allow is that he is one paced and can therefore sometimes be caught out by quicker players. I think the fact he is the only senior right back and therefore rarely gets a rest should not be overlooked either. If you want your full backs to play like Roberto Carlos/Cafu then I understand the criticism (by some) of Finnan. Like I said above, that is not what I look for in a defender.
stonty Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Finnan is a decent steady player, he gets forward and gives support as much as can, (with SG now in the middle) if it weren't for him we wouldn't have any offensive right sided play at all.
Guest Anders Honoré Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 knox harrington is gonna flay you alive for this thread. Finnan is the bestest in the world.
baja the hut Posted January 6, 2007 Author Posted January 6, 2007 So shut up then. I don't know where you get your pompous arrogant tone from, i guess you are a 'superfan'. If you can't bother engaging me in an honest argument then please don't bother....how this isn't ostensibly bad behaviour towards another forumite with an opposing view is beyond me.

If everyone of our players were as consistent as he is, we would be in the title hunt. He is pure class and his 1 priority is to defend, which he do without fuzz. Ok so he isn't a Cafu but it's other players who should be raising their game. He is the best RB in the league along with , dare I say it, G Neville.
CarraLegend Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 can you give me a reason why? You whinge about something petty like passing the ball back a few times, big f***ing deal, every right back in world football passes the ball backwards at some point. Watch him play, he's a quality defender and one of the best crossers of the ball in the Premiership, if you want to swap that for a speed merchant with a fancy foreign name who cant actually defend thats your call but I dont. Your "we cant win the league without top quality attacking full backs" just topped off a laughable post.

floyd Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 one of the best crossers of the ball in the Premiership, with either foot
