Satan is an anagram of Santa.

Beeb bans satan song

Dec 9 2006

By Adam Aspinall

THE BBC was at the centre of an unholy Christmas row last night after using a Satanic rock song to promote its festive programmes.

Embarrassed Beeb bosses called an emergency meeting after the Sunday Mercury exposed the black magic blunder ? and have now taken the shock tune off air.

The BBC had been promoting its Christmas drama line-up, featuring family favourites like Doctor Who and Robin Hood, with a track called Christmas with the Devil.

Its dark lyrics mocked the holy season and featured lines such as: "There'll be no Father Christmas, 'Cause it's Evils holiday", and "Silent Night, Violent Night".

The use of the song, written by spoof rock outfit Spinal Tap, was immediately condemned by Midland church leaders.

Canon Peter Howell-Jones, of Birmingham Cathedral, said: "I think it's in very bad taste.

"Of course the BBC seem to see it as a harmless bit of fun. But this is a year in which that type of thing is going to cause offence very easily, soI can't believe they used it.

"I have enough to do without having to defend God from things like this. It's just an example of bad, ill-conceived programming from the BBC.

"If it had done this with other faiths you could have been sure the outcry would have been far bigger."

He added: "The current climate in our country means that the BBC has an added responsibility to be sensible about what it puts on air.

"There may have been no deliberate attempt to offend people, but it should have thought twice about using this song."
