BBC Sports Personality of the Year award

It's on this Sunday, and the shortlist of contenders is mediocre at best.

A shortlist of 10 contenders has been named for the 2006 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

 

Equestrian star Zara Phillips, golfer Darren Clarke, tennis player Andy Murray, plus boxers Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton are among the candidates.

 

Cyclist Nicole Cooke, cricketer Monty Panesar, gymnast Beth Tweddle, darts champion Phil Taylor and Formula One's Jenson Button complete the list.

Haven't a clue who will win this. Maybe Clarke will get the sympathy vote after his wife died. The princess will get votes too from mainly those who aren't generally into sport, the X-Factor crowd, no doubt. Calazghe's been moaning about the fact he won't win these sort of awards, and he's probably right.

I suppose if Owen could win the award for scoring one great goal in the world cup and Rusedski for reaching a tennis final, any one of those contenders could win this.
