The French Immigration Model compared to the EU and the World..?

I've heard a few times (On this forum) that the French model for immigration and tolerance is a good example of how countries should be approaching things - but fairly often in the media there seem to be examples of intolerance and racist problems occuring in France?

Is this perception fair or have the media got an agenda?

I've also heard that the UK is possibly the most tolerant and welcoming country in the EU for immigrants - again, how true is this and is the model in place for the UK the best one in Europe - or are there other, better candidates? Obviously the UK has a problem with people like the BNP - but I'd imagine that every country in the EU (If not the world) have people like this spreading problems and intolerance?

What's the general view on this
