alonso - just not strong enough for the prem

well he was great in his first season, others teams knew little about him, so was granted tons of space to work his magic..

 

2nd season and he was closed down alot quicker and we saw a poor xabi, one hardly recognisable from the season before..

 

this season, and its the same as last...teams closing him down, sufforcating the pass which leads alonso to make some rash tackles and genereally give the ball away alot more than what we once expected..

 

like many on here first suspected, he is a luxury...and possibly one we cannot afford, just doesnt do enough in games to warrant a guarrented first place...

 

although...and every manager has one, i cant see Rafa dropping him(especially not with sissoko out) but even with sissoko fit, Alonso is Rafas eyes and ears on the pitch....you see rafa shouting instructions to Xabi more than any other player.....

 

dissapointed in alonso but not suprised to be honest, if a 15mill bid came in the summer....i`d sell...

Xabi's not been in top form this season, but neither has the bulk of players in the team. The movement beside him and around him hasn't exactly been top class.

He is an elegant and talented footballer but does not control the middle as effectively as some with less skill but more hardness.

That's stretching things quite a bit, we had nobody who was outstanding.

 

What made Xabi stand out since he joined us is his vision and his ability to set up/start a move.

 

This year we are seeing a player who is playing alot deeper than maybe he should and a player who is not making those raking passes to a player in space.

 

Is he another example of post World Cup syndrome? Carragher, Gerrard and alonso are nothing like the players we know they can be.

 

As for selling him , that's not really a good idea.

I only saw the first half so I can't comment on the second, but he was indeed outstanding in the first 45 minutes.

Xabi barely put a foot wrong yesterday, it was one of his best games for us. Watch it again and watch out for him. You'll agree.

i was at the match and i don't think i recall him misplacing a pass. he also won s***loads of challenges in momo's absence, but was largely playing centre mid by himself.

To be fair, just because Kenny Park doesn't control the middle as effectively as Xabi, doesn't mean there might not be a professional footballer out there who does.
