In what circumstances is it ok to miss christmas with the family?

I'm being quite optimistic and conducting a long distance (some 3000 miles) relationship. There were 5 of the best days in my life back in August and now we're talking about the Christmas break. Only she wants me to spend Christmas with her family. I've never met any of her family and apparently they want to meet me. I'm 21, moved out of the family house at 17 but this would be the first Christmas I wouldn't be at and my mother is a master of guilt.

 

I'm not too sure about meeting the parents either, she's from Virginia, the dad could be sitting there polishing his gun collection when I arrive.
