Buying a car

I want to buy a car to replace my clapped-out Peugeot, but have no idae what to go for.

 

Let's say I spend £10k. What should I get? I have no particular preference for whether it;s new or second-hand.

 

Just need it to drive to work occassionally, and to razz up to Liverpool or Newcastle every couple of weeks. (f*** the train.)
