My wife and I are moving into our new house in a about 3 weeks and it needs modernised from top to bottom. We have kept aside money we made on our last house to put in a new kitchen and conservatory and to do whatever else can be squeezed into that budget. It is looking likely that most of it (£20k) will be eaten up by just the kitchen and conservatory but there is still a shedload to be done.

I like a bit of DIY and can do all the simple stuff like hanging shelves and curtain rails, putting down laminate flooring and all the easy peasy stuff like that but to cut the costs in the new place I am considering doing a lot of work myself.

The hallway has 9 doors off it and to get a joiner to hang 9 new doors would cost a small fortune. I have never hung a door before. Is it easy? Would I need someone to show me how to do the first one or could I work it out?

I also want to tile the hall floor but I have never done that either. Is that easy or would it be better to splash out the 2 or 3 hundred quid to get a fitter in?

Should I even consider considering to replace the velux windows myself or is that a step too far?

I dont' actually know what I am wanting to hear from you - I suppose I just want to know if any of you would do this sort of stuff yourself without training or of any DIY disasters you may have had.
