we have chatted here a few times about Ypres, the Somme and the flanders fields.

we have chatted less about Verdun where there was similar mindless slaughter. But Ypres is in northern France/Belgium. Verdun is south, way down near Metz

However, my question is.... WHY the huge gap? Is it simply Luxemburg? Flanders to the north, the Argonne to it's south that created such a huge "gap" in the lines/fighting? I assume the Maginot Line was also involved and some sort of pincer movement?

Anyone point me in a direction?
