Phantom Pregnancy in Dogs

We've got two dogs, a Bearded Collie and a Lhasa Apso, both female.

The Lhasa is about 10 months old, and a couple of months ago had her first time 'in season'. A month or so later, she went off her food and hasn't been herself at all for the last couple of weeks.

I took her to the vet, and it turns out she is having a phantom pregnancy. Its weird - her body is actually producing milk (a spot of which was on the examining table at the vet's after she checked her), she keeps disappearing behind the couch and scratching around, and if she had any stuffed toys apparently she'd be frantically trying to mother them.

The vet gave her a couple of jabs, and some tablets to take, but she basically said it should just go away naturally in time.

Feel really sorry for the poor thing - anyone else with animals ever had them experience this? I'd never heard of it before but apparently it is very common in female cats and dogs.
