No. Not particularly. We should have the best players we can get regardless of where they are from. If they happen to be from Liverpool and are brilliant like Gerrard or Fowler then great. If not move them on.

It’s an example. Isak did however cost 100 million though and he’s been much worse than Wirtz and gets nowhere near as much flak.

Indeed. It’s not his fault he cost what he cost. Loads defended Jones right up until he left yet he had about 3 decent games for us in his whole career. He got a pass as he was scouse.

I’d be selling and replacing Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Kerkez and Frimpong before even looking at Wirtz.

I think we’d be loads better with Camara and Wharton as our midfield two.

To say his execution is s*** completely ignores what he did literally a few days ago in the Champions League. Against Atlético Madrid, Wirtz ran the show. He completed 42 out of 46 passes (91% accuracy) and created 5 major chances entirely from open play, the most of any player on the pitch. On top of that, his technical finish against Nottingham Forest was a brilliant pirouette into the bottom corner, and his incisive through-ball against Ipswich was weighted absolutely perfectly to open up the entire defence. Both were world-class execution, but they were ruled out by millimeter VAR offsides. If those two moments stand and our forwards finish the 5 chances he carved open against Atlético, we aren't even having a conversation about his weight of pass.

But those issues you speak of were not in Wirtz’s game in Germany and it had nothing to do with the quality of the league.

We need to talk about the tactical setup rather than just pointing fingers at Wirtz. Wirtz relies entirely on the platform built behind him, and today, the Gravenberch/Szoboszlai pivot highlighted part of the issue. Szoboszlai won just 1 of his 9 duels, leaving the backline completely unprotected. As a result, Wirtz had to chip in with 9 defensive contributions just to keep us stable. Wirtz shouldn't be burning his energy doing the pivot's job. Furthermore, this isn't just a central issue, our lack of natural width is killing us. We need better full-backs and deploy a genuine right winger as well as getting Barcola up to speed on the left, then we will naturally stretch the opposition's defensive line. Spreading the play wide will finally open up the central pockets of space that Wirtz craves.

A bit like Wirtz last season and this. he created plenty of chances that were missed.
