I think an awful lot of things went our way last season, that's why we came 2nd. Could just as easily have been 3rd or 4th as well as 1st. Therefore, I think we'll have had a decent season if at the end of 14/15 we're in the top 4 again. Anything above and beyond that is icing on the cake, but the icing is what makes the cake special.

Utd have more money than us. If they sign Juan Veron for loadsa money, there's more where that came from. If we sign Andy Caroll, we're struggling to replace the money we blew on him.

Utd's margin for transfer errors is far bigger than ours.

Every time you make a signing you're effectively placing a bet on the incoming player. You estimate the odds that the player will actually improve you and you estimate the loss you'd make in case he doesn't. The odds stay the same no matter how much you pay for the same player, but obviously the loss goes up. Neither of these estimations are exact science and there's a lot of other considerations, but if the club are saying at the end of it all that Lallana is worth 25m to them but not 30, then I for one am not going to disagree.
