Hmmm LIVERPOOL NEWS Benitez: Liverpool may break transfer record May 20, 2009 Comment Email Print Rafael Benitez has said he may well break the club's transfer record again this summer. In the last two summers, the Liverpool boss has spent £20m-plus on first Fernando Torres and then Robbie Keane. GettyImages Rafa Benitez: Plotting his summer raids. And although Benitez is believed to have been given only £20m by the club's American owners for a transfer spree - any more will have to come from sales - the Spaniard is planning purchases at both ends of the financial scale. Linked again with Carlos Tevez this week - a move that has been talked about at Anfield now for some while - the club say they have not made a bid to the players' third party owners. But Benitez is known to be keen to pair Tevez again with his compatriot Javier Mascherano, the Argentina stars joining West Ham together back in August 2006. However, he said: ''We may well break our transfer record, but certainly not Manchester United's. But it does not matter about the prices, it is doing the right thing and finding the right players.'' But having all but assured themselves of runners-up spot in the Premier League now behind champions Manchester United, Benitez knows he has to work carefully in the transfer market this summer to maximise the funds he has been given, or can generate. He said: ''The next step is to overcome Manchester United, and that is the hardest. It does all come down to the money they have been able to spend, that is the difference. ''If we want to reduce this gap we have to be really good in the transfer market this summer. That can be the difference between winning the two or three extra points that we would need to win the title. ''We do not have that sort of money, so we have to be cute and clever in the market. Then it does not matter if you have money or not. ''When you have a lot of money it is easier because nobody notices your mistakes. For us it is important to find good targets to buy and make ourselves successful. ''We have learned a lot about our squad this season, we know each player that little bit better and it means we can improve for next season.'' He added: ''The fact that we have won nine of our last 10 games and not won the title just shows the high level of the Premier League. ''This season we have managed very good performances against the top sides, something we had not been doing before and now we have to improve a little bit more. ''We have 83 points and that would have been enough to win the title on six other occasions since the Premier League started. I can only underline that I am pleased and proud of my team to have gone this close.'' Benitez has started to generate cash from his squad by agreeing a £1m fee for defender Jack Hobbs to stay at Leicester, where he has helped them to promotion from League One. Winger Paul Anderson will also join Swansea for a fee of around £750,000. Xabi Alonso is being linked with a £22m move to Real Madrid, while Ryan Babel could also be sold. Striker Andriy Voronin is also expected to be moved on.

Latest from Ballague. Silva would choose Liverpool over Juventus We are still getting quite a few emails and comments from Liverpool fans asking if David Silva is on his way to Anfield…. Win a Signed Torres Home Shirt 2008/10!I have to say that very little has changed since we last dealt with it here. Since then, the market has been moving very slowly in terms of actual offers being made for the player. However, Silva`s representatives are expecting any interested clubs to make their move at the end of the summer. Valencia are willing – they have to – sell the player and will want things sorted quickly, so they will probably be happy to do business with the first club to put an acceptable offer on the table. At this moment in time, neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid have made a move for Silva – and if it ends up as a straight fight between Juventus or Liverpool, the player would prefer a move to Anfield. That does not mean David Silva is definitely on his way to Liverpool, but it does mean that there has perhaps never been a better time to try and secure the services of one of the most talented attacking midfielders in Europe. However, Rafa Benitez is going to have to play his cards cleverly as, following the initial contact, Valencia have been told that before Liverpool make a second approach, Benitez will have to offload a couple of players first.

Pennant strikes La Liga deal Author: Nigel Brown Posted on: 13 May 2009 - 14:28 Category: Football Comments: 1 Go... Former Arsenal, Leeds United and current Liverpool right winger Jermaine Pennant has clinched a Bosman transfer to Spanish club Valencia this summer according to reports in the Spanish press. Pennant, currently on loan at Portsmouth was keen to stay at Anfield, but sources suggest Rafa Benitez has been told to cut the wage budget at Anfield, if he wants to sign his transfer targets this summer. The wideman was linked with a shock move to Real Madrid in the January transfer window but the deal fell through after Pennant decided he wanted to fight for his place at Anfield. The reports will come as blow to Pompey fans after Pennant admitted yeaterday that a move to the South Coast was a possibility. He said: "It's always going to be an option. I've enjoyed my time there. I've had a very hard season, but next season we'll see what happens."

I'm south at the moment, and all I hear is the swooshing of the wind buffeting the trees, and two taxi drivers trading insults in the traffic jam outside the office window. Oh, and a bird has just deposited it's lunch on my car that I cleaned yesterday. soooooooo, nothing to hear down here.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has revealed Argentina captain Javier Mascherano has turned down an approach by an unnamed club. The Liverpool boss is preparing his side for Sunday's crucial Barclay's Premier League clash with Newcastle at Anfield aware that the 25-year-old's position at the club has been undermined. Mascherano is only 15 months into a four-year contract, but Benitez held talks with him following the midfielder's own claims that he was unsure about his own future on Merseyside. Benitez refused to name the club concerned but it is understood the approach did not come from either Italy or Spain. That suggests a British club could be involved because it is unlikely that a club from anywhere else could match the player's wages or likely fee. However Benitez has been quick to defuse the situation saying: "Javier is happy here with the fans, the club and the manager. I have had a very positive conversation with him. "He has already said no to one club, a good side. He wants to stay but he cannot stop big clubs asking about him. "If you are a top-class player, people are always asking about you. They will know if there are four or five big clubs asking for them and the player would be proud of that. "He has tried to be polite and correct. Now I have had a conversation with him and it was very clear he wants to continue to play for us. I do not see this as a big problem. "The conversation with him was very honest and he was very clear about things. "These things happen always in football, clubs all around the world will work like this. It is just part of the situation that exists at the top level. "You just have to handle it and work with the situation when it arises. "Clearly we do not want to lose key players. Players like Mascherano and Xabi Alonso have long contracts so we are in a strong position, while we are very close now to sorting out Daniel Agger's position here. http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/...ual_161945.html

No, put your mortgage on it. But, sentiments aside, we'll either do it, or not. So there you are, I'm going for a lose, a win , or a draw.
