  2. Gerrard started more games in the league last season than Rooney, Ronaldo or Drogba, and only one less than Lampard. That's our top player right there, playing in almost every league game (36 out of 38).

  4. Of course you actually start the game with 0 points, and gain either none, 1 or 3. This talk of 'lost points' is daft, the only teams that actually lose points are Leeds, and various cheating Italian clubs. We started today on 10, we haven't finished on 8 (although you'd get that impression listening to some people). Pompey lost two games at home the whole of last season. We lost there last season. Yes, we would all have liked a win, but based on last season 17 of the 19 teams that go down to Pompey don't come back with the three points. So a draw is a decent result. Given the disappointing performance you have to say that we gained a point, because we could very easily have come away with none. And I think you DO have to factor in that Porto are the best team in our Champions League group, and Porto away is on paper our toughest fixture in this seasons Champions league group stage. If we win that, and win our home games, we will qualify to the knockout stages.
  5. You don't mean to say that the reason why we haven't been winning titles is because we haven't won enough games? I'll be darned. I would never have thought of that.

  18. Adapted from an idea I had for a Harry Kewell song: He's stuck trying to mark Benayoun, And he's wondering what it is he should do, Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor, 'Cause we don't think he can take any more, Clowns to the left of him, Jokers to the right, There he is, stuck trying to mark Benayoun There's a possible Man U version in there as well, with the extra bonus of an insult directed at Gary Neville: Brown's to the left of him, Inbred's to the right, There he is, stuck trying to mark Benayoun
  19. Voronin just has to be to the tune: Voronin, Voronin, Didn't cost a thing, Voronin, Voronin, Likes to bang them in, Plays hard but fair, Just don't touch the hair, Voronin, Voronin, Voronin. Voronin, Voronin, Puts Status Quo to shame, Voronin, Voronin, With his dodgy mane, Looks like a crim, Dressed in denim, Voronin, Voronin, Voronin.
  20. I'm certain Gerrard will play both games - he wants to play and that will decide the issue. Having said that there are some indications today that Gerrard might not be playing after all - Barry might play instead: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/foo...icle2388753.ece
  21. No no no no no. We can't possibly judge our new keeper based on his warm up. No - this being YNWA the only way to judge our new keeper is TRIAL BY YOUTUBE!! Itandje vs. Lyon - those of a nervous disposition (especially Big Wayne) shouldn't watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0jRX5qTxpo...ted&search= Itandje vs. Lille (Itandje in green) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goL5p_4cYk4...ted&search=
  22. I understood it just fine - my earlier summary was entirely accurate. You don't know anything about how to apply statistics and apparently have no understanding of statistical significance. Don't try to weasel out - you said Voronin should play instead of Kuyt because of his goals (and pace), and then pointed out Voronins goal stats. It doesn't take a genius to spot the correlation. You also subsequently said that you never used this kind of stats for goals (goals per minute on the pitch) - which you clearly did - and that you never used these kind of stats to back up your argument that Voronin should play ahead of Kuyt - which you also clearly did. Apparently there's a new level in the old saying - lies, damn lies, statistics... and Kaizer.
  23. You need a much larger result set for your numbers to be statistically significant. You would know that if you knew anything about statistics. Emphasis added by me: From another thread - spot both the use of the goals+assists per minute stat that Kaizer NEVER USES, and the use of the goals per minute argument for why Voronin should play ahead of Kuyt, which Kaizer HAS NEVER USED: So not just demonstrably f***ing hopeless at statistics, but demonstrably a liar as well. And - and this bit is my opinion - utterly boring to boot.
  24. And selective use of statistics. Statistics have to be applied consistently to be of any use in backing up your argument. An example - Kaizer recently used the 'amount of goals and assists per minute played' stat to back up his argument that Voronin should be played ahead of Kuyt. However, the statistic he used to diss Crouch in another thread was the number of goals Crouch has scored vs. total appearances in the league only, not counting all the goals Crouch has scored elsewhere, and crucially - for this example - ignoring the goals+assists per minute played stat for Crouch, which last season was excellent - by far the best among our strikers. So if he's going to make the argument that Voronin should play ahead of Kuyt based on his 'per minute on the pitch' stat, then it's clear that Crouch should be playing alongside him. If however you look at the career goals stats for league appearances and compare Voronin and Kuyt the argument is clear - Kuyt should start every time. Picking and choosing which stat you want to use in order to back up your argument, and then not applying these consistently across the board, is the sign of someone who has no clue whatsoever how to use statistics correctly. And all of this completely ignores one of the major things about stats - they don't tell the whole story, and never will. Stats are a tool that can be useful but only if applied correctly. To build a successful team you need a lot more than statistics.
  25. Becoming tiresome? It's seriously f***ing boring, and has been for weeks. Apart from winning the free kick for the first goal (as it went straight in I think that might even qualify as an 'assist', depending on which statto you want to talk to). He also made a run for the second which dragged a defender wide, giving more space for Arbeloa and Babel. He wasn't involved in the third for sure - that was all Mascherano and Torres. He wasn't involved in 4, 5 or 6 because he'd been substituted. He put at least two chances on a plate for the strikers - it's not his fault if the strikers don't take clear chances. As many other people have noted - he makes space for other players. When playing on the wing he nearly always attracts two markers - the full back and the wide midfielder - which means more space for our full back to get a cross in. Look how many assists Finnan got last year - a coincidence? I think not. The other thing Pennant brings to our team is balance. We have one winger who cuts in and shoots and gets on the end of things, and another who hugs the byline and gives us real width - which stretches the play and makes more space (again) for our other midfielders and strikers. It's great having wingers who can also cut in and shoot a bit. However players who can cross well with one foot and also cut in and shoot well with the other are quite rare. If the winger is being deployed on the 'wrong' wing that can diminish the quality of the crossing from that wing, although it might give him more chances to shoot with his stronger foot. If shooting is not Pennants strongest suit (and I don't think it is) then it's much better if he crosses the ball for one of the strikers rather than taking a pot shot himself. The only criticism I have of Pennant is that when the play is coming down the other flank he could get into better positions in or around the box and maybe get on the end of something. Apart from that I think he's doing exceptionally well.
