Its interesting to me that you don't rate Mascherano because in my view he has two qualities that could make Steven a real world class player in a central position. Gerrard is technically very gifted and has the potential to be a great. This is why he is capable of scoring 15 goals without being at the top of his game. However, he lacks consistency. He cannot impose himself on nearly every game he plays like Mascherano or Roy Keane. I also think that he doesn't have great game intelligence, in that he doesn't understand positioning or the when and how to be most effective like a Fabregas. For Gerrard, its all about bursting a gut and doing it himself or holding back and offering nothing. There is no real footballing savvy and I think that Rafa has identified that. He is not a central midfielder. He is a right sided midfielder.
