Downing wouldn't be a bad choice for one simple reason - he'd fit into the system that Rafa wants to play. He isn't a brilliant, game-changing player - but he does a good job of hugging the touchline and keeping the right back tied up. Watching and listening to Rafa it's pretty obvious that he likes to spread opposition defences and exploit the gap it creates between the right back and the right centre-back. Babel and Yossi don't work out there because they both cut inside. So, while I'd agree that Downing isn't going to excite us, I think he'd fit into the system very very well. And it's time we bought players that plug into the system.
