I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know what comments are OTT. But he's not good enough for us. His self-confidence has been his downfall I think, he hasn't improved one aspect of his game in the past 3 years.

Er, yes. I'm not arguing that we could use a Robben or Mancini type player. Obviously they'd be a better choice. The point I'm talking about is Elisha's indication that we're after an uninspiring winger. Downing is the one that makes sense to me. So, in conclusion - I am clearly not suggesting that Downing would be a better signing for us that Diego Maradona would have been in his prime.

I wish we could do better than that too. But the reality is we've got to prioritize I suppose. Much as I'd love us to see a top top left winger added I just can't think of who'd be available at a price that we can "afford". Bellamy, Voronin, Pennant...I think they're good examples of risks. Bellamy did a decent job for us. Voronin is crap. Pennant has been ok. Leto I think the jury is still out on. And I think Rafa is much more likely to take risks on players in attacking positions than on players in defence.

We could use 7 or 8 top quality players. But the reality is which top quality left wingers are available this summer, and at what price? It's like Skrtel and Agger...we could have spent 5 times as much on a couple of "top quality" centre-backs. We didn't. And they're both doing exceptionally well.

Downing wouldn't be a bad choice for one simple reason - he'd fit into the system that Rafa wants to play. He isn't a brilliant, game-changing player - but he does a good job of hugging the touchline and keeping the right back tied up. Watching and listening to Rafa it's pretty obvious that he likes to spread opposition defences and exploit the gap it creates between the right back and the right centre-back. Babel and Yossi don't work out there because they both cut inside. So, while I'd agree that Downing isn't going to excite us, I think he'd fit into the system very very well. And it's time we bought players that plug into the system.

Grind out. Did you watch? We were all over them, and without some decent goalkeeping would have won by 3 or 4. Never looked in danger. Of course a 1-0 is a bit nerve-wracking, it only takes a second to give up the lead, but that was as one-sided a 1-0 as I've seen this year.

Ronaldo is a f***ing t***. If we even got him for free I'd be furious. Same for Rooney, Rio.. Tevez, Giggs on the other hand I'd happily take.

Yes. I went to school with both of them. While they're both knobends, Phil fancies himself as a ladies man.

He inherited a squad full of prima donnas. He'll do well next season. Won't break the top 4, but may turn it into a top 5.
