The difference between those clubs and the rest though is the money doesn't matter. Mistakes don't matter. Gambles can be taken without consequences. They might only be able to play 11 but if that 11 doesn't perform they can replace every one of them if the boss sees fit.

I think most fans would prefer success while living within their means personally. But the clubs who have literally just been given money with an unending resource stream have destroyed that dream. It's why nearly everyone wanted Leicester to win the league because it flew in the face of that.

I don’t see why us not going for VVD in this window means he’s going to City or Chelsea. There’s no way we were getting him this season so I read it as get someone else now, then potentially go back for VVD in the summer. Start next season with a new partnership at the back then.
