Liverpool reserves last home game of the season saw Reserve League North champions Manchester United visit The Racecourse. Despite a good showing against West Brom Liverpool changed that starting line up with Hobbs coming back into the side and Calliste relegated to the bench. This saw Guthrie facing his former club playing behind Idrizaj in the hole.

 

Te Reds got a deserved one nil victory thanks to a second half goal from Antonio Barragan and completed the double at this level over their fierce rivals.

 

Liverpool had the best of the opening exchanges with both Anderson and Foy seeing shots miss the target, but they failed to keep the momentum going and Utd started to force their way back into the game.

 

Utd should really have taken the lead in the 22nd minute when fullback David Gray was clean through on goal. He really should have hit the target as he went to slot the ball into the bottom corner but he must have thought "My oh my" as in slow motion he managed to put the ball the other side as he saw it sail away.

 

Man United were allowing Liverpool no time on the ball and this was making it quite a scrappy affair. Danny Guthrie was looking like Liverpool's best hope as he was consistently making himself available. In the 31st minute he was forced to go alone and he beat two united players before trying to chip the keeper who was off his line. The chip didn't have enough height and the keeper collected with ease.

 

Just before half time Bez combined well with Foy inside the box. A last ditch tackle on Foy saw the ball bounce out to Peltier who unleashed a venomous shot that seemed destined for the net until it hit a united defender.

 

As the lads came out for the second half Liverpool began to dominate. They were causing united problem from corners and in the 52nd minute a right wing corner nearly saw Liverpool take the lead. Antwi jumped well and his looping header nearly crept in but Steele just managed to tip it over.

 

On the hour mark the ineffective Idrizaj was replaced by another ex manc in Calliste and Liverpool continued to exert pressure. Anderson had an effort from a diving header and great play from Guthrie saw Calliste curl an attempt just wide.

 

In the 73rd minute the deadlock was broken. Foy took a corner from the left and Hobbs rose to meet it. He was closely marked by Shawcross who's defelected clearance fell to Barragan, he hit a powerful half volley first time. The keeper was unsighted and did exceptionally well to get a hand to it, but he was unable to prevent the ball hitting the back of the net. Barragan ran and celebrated right in front of the manc fans, which I found quite funny.

 

There was a decent turn out with 1179 being the official attendance. It seems even at this level the classless b******s can't help themselves and we had the de rigueur Michael Shields tannoy announcement.

 

Both sides had half chances in the remaining minutes and united came close with just seconds remaining. The highly rated Neumayr who'd been kept quiet for most of the game took a free kick from the left wing. The ball was hit hard and low into the box managing to evade everyone and go just wide of Martin's upright.

 

The ressies just have one game left this season when they travel to Manchester to face City. With another performance like the last two then we should be able to sign off with another victory.

 

MOM. Peltier. He was excellent throughout, won the ball numerous times and never gave it away. Honourable mentions to Guthrie who was again very good and to James Smith who was faultless. Smith's performances this season have been rewarded with a two year extension to his contract and I'm made up for the lad. He really is Mr Consistant.

Any word on who'll be on their way in the summer?

Well it seemed that Smith was off but he's got a deserved reprieve. I believe Foy, O'Donnell and Calliste are off.

 

 

Idrizaj wis highly rated and current Austrian young player of the year. I'm sure we'll see more from him but he's struggled to settle. He was excellent against West Brom and showed a few good touched today. I think the pace of the game has come as a shock to him.

Plus Idrizaj has struggled with an injury for a spell this season I seem to recall (ended up missing a few youth cup games cos of it), so all in all, not the easiest first season.

 

He did sign a 2 year contract I think tho, and I see no reason why he shouldn't stay for that 2nd year. He's only 17, and hopefully will feel more settled and more confident next season, a year older and wiser!

We had another trialist playing for the u18s yesterday, Joseph Mills from Southampton an England u17 international. Think he plays in midfield and up front.

Have you heard anything about Sturridge from Man City. I heard that we are in for him but Chelsea are also ready to pay £1m.

Nah, just what Dave said on TLW, the papers have been linking him with Chelsea for weeks. He's still only 16 isn't he so he could probably leave for no more than compensation in the summer. He looks exceptional though.

Thanks for the reports this season Adam, you've been excellent for us.

 

It'll be a shame for Calliste if he's let go after the disapointment of not making the grade at the mancs, but in honesty i'm not too surprised.

 

Will be interesting to see what young strikers we can find during the summer, thats a position we are clearly weak on at that level.

 

It will be interesting to see if any of them get moved up to the senior squad for next season.

I'm tired of them trying to buy the future of this country, if any player has anysense they wont go there

I just know he's still in school so can't be any more than 15/16. I agree, I only saw him in the final but what a prospect. With us being in the north we must stand a chance of getting him if we go for him.

No David Gray fans I take it?

 

I can't see City holding on to Sturridge. If Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are interested I think he'll deffo leave.
