Kewell goes from Fairfield to high fashion

April 30, 2006

Socceroo Harry Kewell is to star in a high-profile campaign for fashion house Armani alongside some of the biggest names in international football.

Kewell, who plays for Liverpool in the English Premier League, has been selected by design legend Giorgio Armani to appear in a World Cup photo shoot.

He will line up alongside France's Patrick Vieira, Ukraine's Andriy Shevchenko, Brazilian star Kaka and Kewell's Spanish Liverpool teammate, Xabi Alonso.

"Stars are myths, and footballers are modern myths," Armani said of the project. "But they are myths that live closer to their public than anyone else."

The players will be photographed in outfits from 1970s and '80s cult films including American Gigolo and Shaft, movies in which Armani dressed the actors.

"Mr Armani's concept is to depict the footballers as characters in Hollywood films from the 1970s," Armani spokesperson Anna Matthews said.

"He sees current international footballers as Hollywood stars.

"Harry Kewell was selected by Mr Armani and our head office in Milan.

"We wanted to have an international cast and Harry is one of Australia's top footballers and well-known names."

The shoot will appear in a one-off magazine to be published before the World Cup and launched in Milan in June by Armani.

Kewell, now recognised as one of the star players in Europe, is expected to star in British football's showcase game - the FA Cup final on May 13 - when Liverpool meet West Ham.

This will be his last match before turning out for the Socceroos in their opening game of the World Cup against Japan in Germany, starting on June 9.

There is an injury cloud still hanging over Kewell with the national coaching staff concerned about his recovery from a recent groin injury. He limped off during Liverpool's FA Cup semi-final win over Premier League leaders Chelsea.

The left-winger makes regular appearances in Britain's tabloid newspapers because of his marriage to local TV soap star Sheree Murphy. The couple, who met in a UK nightclub, have two children.

Kewell grew up in western Sydney and played his junior football in the Fairfield area.

Football giants Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea last year expressed interest in signing him.

 Can't say much for his outfit today, though.
