Star's Bedtime Nightmare

Updated: 10:30, Thursday March 16, 2006

England's footballers will enjoy five-star luxury when they travel to their base-camp for this summer's World Cup finals.

Their mountain-top hotel in south west Germany includes spa baths, a gym and has two golf courses nearby.

But one player who may not be entirely satisfied is lofty Liverpool striker Peter Crouch.

At 6ft 7in he is slightly too tall for the 60 new king-size beds ordered at the request of the FA.

The two metre beds are a quarter of an inch too short.

However one helpful member of staff had a possible solution.

"Yes, but they are also two metres wide," she told a national newspaper. "So the tallest players can sleep diagonally."

The Schlosshotel Buhlerhohe is in the northern part of the Black Forest, close to the town of Baden-Baden.

It has recently hosted VIP guests including Nelson Mandela and Bill Clinton.

Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, who inspected the hotel yesterday, said he was happy with its remote location.

He said: "It is remote on purpose because in the World Cup we will have a lot of people around us.

"England are an extremely popular team with a lot of fans and we must have a private place."

The squad will call the hotel home from June 5.
