How about selling points? sounds silly, how about somthing like this.

Each team is allowed to spend 10million on transfers. then, you can sacrifice 1point for each further 2 million. therefore, if chelsea were to sign SWP, then they would use their 10mil, plus lose 5 points in the league. That would basically leverage their buying and selling to an improvement in the league.

Obviously rudimentary, but something along those lines would surely mean teams are more balanced in their approach, and more performance related transfers would take place. This could also be designed to exclude transfers below 1mil, so that teams struggling in the lower leagues can continue to sell players, or only be valid for players over 24/27?

Call me cynical, but Chelsea would buy SWP for £1 upfront and £9,999,999 into an offshore account suiting both buying and selling parties.

Great idea. Could it be backdated though so that Chelsea can go back from whence they came? :)

I've never heard of anything like this, so 10/10 for coming up with it. That said, it would be unworkable, and would no doubt trample over various European laws. But the spirit of the post - some sort of handicapping system to try to make things a bit more even - is worthwhile, though I don't see the will in the game to make it happen.

BTW, out of interest, in such a system I wonder where we'd finish. We are not the biggest spenders, but we are one of the biggest. Teams like Wigan and West Ham would be doing very well, as would Bolton. Bosman players would be even more important, as would ageing players with low contracts left, but still able to do a job for a year or two (Bolton's strategy).

On current form chelsea would still be able to buy £30m or so of players and still finish top.

Something like the salary caps used in the NFL in the states would probably be more workable and acceptable to the clubs.
