What gets me is the way that they lift it up when they see a tallish person coming - thus poking the thing straight into the face.

 

I have found that the best defence is... attack. When others start to open up, I do the same: the steel shaft prevents opposition spikes from getting near the face. As I live in a place renowned for its crowdedness, this is a very important little trick.
