I'm planning my summer trip (it's going to be backpacking. It goes like this:

Helsinki -> St.Petes (via train) (stay at least 3 nights)

St.Petes -> Moscow (via train/bus)(3 nights)

Moscow -> Tallinn (via train/bus)(1 night)

Tallinn -> Tartu (via train/bus)(2 nights)

Tartu -> Tallinn -> Helsinki by ferry

has anyone been to St.Petersburg? Moscow?

Accommodation information would be helpful.

my concern is mostly accommodation related and safety in Russia. I hear the police can be feckers when they stop and search you..

Only generally to furtive looking western males - even then they're careful in case you're a contractor working for some oligarch etc. It's like anywhere else in many ways, don't behave like a nob and the police just smile as they walk past to their next drugs and currency bust. Accomodation is cheap comparitively - so go for the best you can afford as that garners better security. The wquivalent of a fine 3 star hotel (not the Metropole!) costs around the same as a decent quality B&B here - so you can get very comfortable for not very much.

Talinn is a bit more pricey, and Helsinki is not cheap at all - though good quality is affordable - some nice places around the main railway station - not too close, a few streets back from the front. When my wife gets home I'll ask for the info on the one we stayed in which was great.
