Looking at heading off for a long weekend to a European city at the end of November.

Fancy taking in a Christmas market drinking beer and mulled wine somewhere, Just wondering if any of you have recommendations

So far I have been looking at Berlin Dussledorf and a few of the Scandinavian ones..

Needs to be fairly cheap to get to from Bristol if possible.

Muchos gracias in advance.

Honorable mention for Cologne (could do Duesseldorf and Cologne in one trip and take into two contrasting beer cultures...)

Think the German(ic) ones are more 'Christmassy', although Scandinavia is better in pretty much all other ways except production of automobiles...

Been to a few over the years, Munich last year, and the best of the lot was Strasbourg (and a doddle to get to on the train). Closely followed by Stockholm. Copenhagen a bit meh, as was Zurich. Salzburg was fantastic but FiL cracked two ribs and spent the weekend in the hospital which put a damper on things. All great places to visit but for the market/atmosphere//getting you into the Christmas spirit, Strasbourg for me

She wants to go to Berlin this year. Not for the market but as we've never been. I'd like to go back to Vienna as I missed most of that one as it was a friends 50th.

I used to live in Dusseldorf and was there for the football this weekend and I noticed one of the places they used to have a lot of the markets is being totally redeveloped. It'll still all be nice and cosy around the Altstadt but there is a lot of building going on around the Kö, so might not be the year to go this year. Cologne is nice too but gets madly busy, spacer seems harder to come by around the Dom there.

Copenhagen is a brilliant city and I know it well but I never rated the Christmas market that much funny enough. In fact I would rate the German xmas market experience much more than anywhere I have been in Scandinavia. And the difference in the price of booze makes a big difference if you plan on going on the beer for it.

I reckon Nuremberg or Freiburg might be the way to go but if I was you, I would be looking at how handy flights are and keep it simple. When you get there and especially if there is a cold snap, you'll enjoy it anyway.

A lot to be said for a direct flight out and back, and all of them are really nice anyway.
