Hotel recommendations

I want to take the family (all 18+) for a couple of nights' stay somewhere but I want somewhere that has (a) proper decent food, not just bog standard hotel fayre (b) a spa © maybe a golf course or at least has one nearby (d) is not necessarily luxury level but is genuinely comfortable (e) is in the nothern half of England and (f) is preferably not a DeVere, McDonald or Q hotel.
