Well it's got to be better than 2.

Slightly concerned that including adding the Mandarin to the Extremis plot might lead to the sort of too many villains problem we've seen with a few of these films.

there you go with that general forum negativity and cynicism again.

Not sure what was so terrible about 2.

It's just too long, a bit boring and the pacing is all over the place. The Rhodey having to suit up and reign Tony in part was pretty hamfisted. Oh and Scarlett Johansson was terrible as Black Widow. Thankfully, she was much, much better in the Avengers - but she was awful in that first appearance.

It basically wasn't as good as the first is about the general view people seem to peddle.

It wasn't obviously, however it wasn't that bad either.

too much of everything was the problem. too many main characters, too many plotlines, etc

What was the difference between the two Black Widow performances exactly?

Just didn't find her very convincing in IM2. In fairness to Scarlett, it's as much to do with the writing as her performance. There was no depth to the character at all in IM2 - she might as well have been any old SHIELD agent assigned to handle Stark. You certainly wouldn't have got a sense there that she was the sort of super spy with the background and capabilities to rival Fury himself. She was given much more to do in the Avengers and she did much better with it.

The second one wasn't as good as the first one but I enjoyed them both

but then again I enjoyed Thor, Captain America and Hulk too

Thor's pretty good, is a little goofy. Captain America was very good I thought. Hulk was OK. It's better than it gets credit for, but there were still problems with it. Norton was no Banner.

Oh really?

I've just started re-reading them, and they're actually pretty scary.

It's one of the great comics runs that. Remarkably dark and scary for a mainstream comic of that era too.

Scott Snyder's current run is the best it's been since then, incidentally. He's another comics writer with a terrific horror sensibility.
