Stevie H Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 excellent news. Steven Gerrard signs four-year deal to stay at Liverpoolhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/ju...erpool-contract • Four-year deal will keep midfielder at Anfield until he is 33• New contract believed to be worth £140,000 a weekAndy Hunterguardian.co.uk, Thursday 9 July 2009 00.05 BST Steven Gerrard has taken another step towards ending his career as a one-club man after last night putting pen to paper on a new four-year contract with Liverpool. The deal, which ties the Huyton-born captain to Anfield until the age of 33 and will cost the club around £30m, was initially announced by Liverpool in April but formally concluded only upon Gerrard's return to pre-season training at Melwood yesterday. The midfielder had left the contract on hold during Liverpool's pursuit of Manchester United for the Premier League title last season, then departed for World Cup duty with England and a holiday before officially committing himself to Anfield until 2013. There were also minor contractual details to be resolved despite the club's announcement of an agreement in April. Gerrard still had two years remaining on a contract worth £120,000 a week and his new deal, believed to have increased his wage to £140,000 a week, may ensure he completes his professional playing career solely as an employee of Liverpool. The 29-year-old recently announced this contract is likely to be his last. The England international follows Yossi Benayoun in signing a new contract with Liverpool this week, while the manager, Rafael Benítez, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt and Daniel Agger have all committed their long-term futures to Anfield in recent months.
ajams Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Will undoubtedly go down in history as one of our all-time greats. Can't think of too many other players who have committed their entire careers to the club.
_00_deathscar Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I'll be disappointed if he retires aged 33 - unless by then he's crap, in which case we better get rid of him now while we can still make a profit on the b*****d.

Currently we have two players in the frame in Carra and Gerrard.

Yeah, Carra as well of course. My personal knowledge only goes back to the late 70s, but I can't think of any in that time (unless I'm forgetting someone obvious). Most of our longest serving players - Scott, Neal, Callaghan, Hunt, Lawler, Phil Thompson, Hughes - began or ended their careers at other clubs. I'm no stat expert but the only one I can think of in the post-war era is Billy Liddell and according to Wiki even he made a few 'guest' appearances for other sides - including 5 games for Chelsea during WW2 apparently.
floyd Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Steven is very, very good, but he ain't no Christian Vieri

Realistically, if someone starts in our ressies or kids and then spends the rest of their career here, bar that very last season or so when they are in their mid-late 30's and running down their legs which have lost it at the highest level you can consider them one-club players to all intents and purposes.
Bogman Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Good news that, in fact, fooking good news that. One problem mind, what the feck are we gonna do when he does hang up those boots?

Sure, that's certainly true of Smith. Thommo is another one who played out just one final season for another club. Anyway, I don't want to be too pedantic about it. It just never occurred to me before how rare it was in Liverpool's history for a player to go through his entire career never playing so much as a game for another club.
