Javier Mascherano agent meets with Barcelona.

Javier Mascherano is on a collision course with Liverpool after his agent held two hours of talks with Barcelona last night.

The Argentina midfielder has been warned by Anfield boss Rafa Benitez that he has no chance of a move, despite admitting that he would love the switch.

But the player's agent, Walter Tamar, defied threats of sanctions for illegal contact with another club by very publicly meeting with representatives of the European champions.

Liverpool have made it clear that Mascherano still has a long contract which he must honour. But he has already said that he wants to play for the Spanish Double winners, and his agent added that the player would make the move happen, if Barca made an approach.

Benitez angrily hit back last week by insisting that Barcelona could not afford him, saying £50million would not be enough.

But it now seems clear that the Argentina star is prepared to risk the wrath of Benitez by openly discussing a deal. Barca are prepared to discuss a swap, which would include their midfielder Yaya Toure in the equation.

The brother of Arsenal's Kolo Toure is unhappy with his current contract and the offer Barca have made for a renewal, and he wants to come to England.

Alvaro Arbeloa has paved the way for Glen Johnson's move to Liverpool by admitting he is likely to return to Spain.

The Anfield full-back is seen as a key figure in the Reds' proposed capture of Portsmouth's Johnson, because his sale will release the funds to complete the £18million deal.

And Spain international Arbeloa yesterday offered the first indication that the process is under way, by revealing his desire to go back home.

"Going back to Spain is always an idea that's in my mind," he said.

"Real Madrid are making a big effort to build a great team. I have a year left at Liverpool but anything could happen."
