8-year-old boy charged in shooting deaths of father, another man

Police have arrested an 8-year-old boy in the shooting deaths of his father and another man.

St. Johns Police Chief Roy Melnick said Friday the boy has been charged with two counts of premeditated murder in the deaths of his father, 29-year-old Vincent Romero, and 39-year-old Timothy Romans of San Carlos.

Chief Melnick said police found one victim just outside the front door Wednesday and the other in an upstairs room.

Chief Melnick said the boy, who prosecutors say had never been in trouble before, initially denied involvement in the shooting but later confessed.

Under Arizona law, charges can be filed against anyone 8 or older. Chief Melnick said the boy didn't act on the "spur of the moment," though he didn't elaborate on what the motive might have been.

Defense attorney Benjamin Brewer said police intimidated the boy and should not have questioned him without a parent or attorney present.
