An adult satellite channel has been fined £20,000 by broadcasting watchdog Ofcom for breaches of its broadcasting code.

Satellite Entertainment was hit with the fine for its adult chat channel SportxxxBabes following complaints about the sexual nature of its unencrypted content.

The watchdog said the content was "wholly unacceptable for broadcast on a free-to-air channel" and the adult sex material "should have been broadcast under encryption".

The channel uses female presenters, described as "babes", who invite viewers to contact them using premium-rate services.

The broadcasts in February and March last year featured intercourse and other acts.

Ofcom's ruling stated: "The unencrypted broadcast of content showing presenters engaging in explicit sexual activity, without strong and sufficient editorial justification for the inclusion of such images, is totally unacceptable. It has the potential to cause offence to viewers and harm to minors."
