Youngsters graduate to Melwood

Starlets Gary Mackay-Steven and Steven Irwin began training at Melwood this week after graduating from the Academy.

The pair, both 18, will now spend 2008-09 working under Gary Ablett and trying to force their way into the title-winning reserves.

 

Mackay-Steven is an exciting winger brought to the club from Ross County a year ago. The left-sider excelled for the under-18s last term before being handed a reserves debut during which he set up a goal.

 

Irwin is one of the most versatile players at the club who captained the under-18s in 2007-08. Though his best position is central midfield, he spent much of last year at right-back.

 

Earlier in the summer the youngster was chosen as one of Liverpoolfc.tv's ones to watch for the forthcoming season.

 

Is Steven Irwin Dennis Irwin's son?

Don't think it was ever mentioned on the LFC TV coverage, so probably no - both have looked very decent players though and if things go well for them they could get there. Good stuff.

Doesn't look like it, a quick google only reveals two kids for Irwin. Neither of whom are called Steven.
