Liverpool lands BBC Sports Personality Awards

THE BBC Sports Personality of the Year is coming to the ECHO Arena.

 

Britain’s top sportsmen and women will descend on the city on December 14 after the waterfront venue won the chance to host the star-studded sporting awards show.

 

Nearly nine million people tuned in last December to see boxing world champion Joe Calzaghe win the prestigious 2007 trophy ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Ricky Hatton.

 

The award show will be broadcast live from the ECHO Arena on BBC1.

 

The flagship sporting event, first broadcast in 1954, will follow hot on the heels of the MTV Awards, which will be held at the waterfront venue in November.

 

It is the latest in a series of major events secured by the city, including the Royal Variety Performance and the Turner Prize.

 

The BBC said the move to Liverpool meant thousands more people would be able to watch the sporting ceremony live.

 

The 2007 awards in Birmingham were watched by a live audience of 8,000, but the ECHO Arena will be able to seat a capacity 10,600.

 

Roger Mosey, director of BBC Sport, said today: “It feels right to be taking Sports Personality of the Year to the great sporting city of Liverpool and it’s particularly exciting to be part of the Capital of Culture events.”

 

Arena and Convention Centre (ACC) Liverpool chief executive Bob Prattey said: "This is a major achievement.”

 

Council leader and Culture Company vice-chairman Warren Bradley said: "The BBC Sports Personality of the Year event is a terrific coup for us and will be a highlight of our year as Capital of Culture."

 

Tickets for the previous two shows sold out within three hours.
