New guy at work goes AWOL after 3 days

We just employed a new guy at work who hasn't turned up after day 3. He hasn't called in and spoken to anyone and we had to call his emergency contact number - his Dad - to make sure everything was ok. I was slightly concerned when his Dad said he'd spoken to him the night before and he sounded distressed (but nothing work related as far as he could or maybe would tell).

The funny thing is I'm mates with our AWOL guys old boss and I spoke to him before we employed him and the lad had been a bit of bovver through drink but I made a judgement that he's young (23) and deserves another chance and he was incredibly enthusiastic about joining us and turned down higher paid jobs to be with us.

We're friendly with the recruiter who placed him and he's making some enquiries as one of our team implied that our chap was celebrating with the recruiters last Friday night and something happened - don't know anything more than that and I can't work out how it could be relevant 5 days later unless it was something to do with the old bill...

My friend who is his ex boss and is abroad on holiday called the chaps best mate to see what he knew and didn't get a clear answer either way but it's a good indication that he's not dead but we're no clearer to understanding what's gone on with him.

I've spoken with the guys that had been working with him this week and he was settling in well but we noticed this morning that he left his laptop behind on Wed which I guess means he knew he wasn't coming back.

I just can't work out why he didn't call in to us or the recruiter or even his old boss to tell us he'd made a mistake and didn't want to come back unless something outside of work has bitten him on the behind.
