A teacher has resigned amid claims his pupils were shown pornographic images, it was reported tonight.

The unnamed teacher at Sandfields Comprehensive School, Port Talbot, South Wales, is alleged to have briefly shown graphic images to 11 and 12-year-olds who were expecting to watch a film in class.

It is thought he used his own personal computer when a school DVD player failed to work, and that the images appeared when he swapped the two machines.

Aled Evans, Neath Port Talbot Council's head of schools, told the South Wales Evening Post: "Following an incident, we can confirm a teacher from Sandfields Comprehensive School was sent home on Friday afternoon pending further investigation.

"The school immediately followed the correct procedures, and appropriate advice and guidance was given to all parties involved.

"Following discussions, the teacher involved has tendered their resignation."

The alleged incident involved Year Seven pupils. Families of the children have said they were distressed by what happened.

A police investigation has been launched.
