2008 PDC World Darts Championship

For anyone interested, the 2008 PDC World Darts Championship started last night at Alexandra Palace. The tournament has moved from Circus Tavern, which is a real shame as the event will definitely lose some of its atmosphere. I went to the Premier League Darts at Alexandra Palace, back in March and although fun, not as good as the Tavern.

The tournament started off with 4 cracking matches. Wayne Mardle coming from 2 sets down to beat Ray Carver 3-2. And a the surprise of the night with 12th seed Colin Lloyd losing to the unseeded Van Der Rassel. Lloyd, the former world number one, has had an appalling year and has now dropped out of the Top Ten.

Highlight tonight is Phil Taylor's first round game with Dutch talent Michael Van Gerwin. Van Gerwin has been touted as a future world champion, but he is very raw and despite Taylors tendency to start slowly, I would expect him to win this match. Mervyn King makes his debut in the PDC tournament tonight and has had a pretty average season, so it will be interesting to see how he gets on here.

Taylor is definitely the favourite for the tournament, as Van Barneveld has dipped in form over the last few months. Aside from them two, I would expect Terry Jenkins and James Wade to progress to the quarter finals, and if Wade shows the form that won this years World Matchplay and World Grand Prix, he could be a good outside bet. Jenkins should progress, but unfortunately he seems to lose his bottle whenever he gets to a final.

I'm heading to the Darts on the 28th, which should be another good session. Anyone else heading down there?
