Dee Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 the second part of this docu on BBC tonight...I didn't see the first part, and I'm sick of the footie...so just having a quick view of this now... to me it's shocking.. but it brings me to an incident today. A student came to see me about an extension for some coursework, apparently she's been pressurised into getting married in Pakistan by her family. She's British Pakistani. Her father is ill with a heart condition and he is insisting she goes to Pakistan to get married. She doesn't want to. Her brother is siding with her father and putting so much pressure on her to get married. To such an extent, she is not allowed out on her own, she is driven everywhere, and her brother waits outside the university for her to finish her lectures to bring her home again. The girl in question wants to complete her degree and do a masters, get a job etc - and does not want to go to Pakistan to become a wife, a cooker and a cleaner... she is suffering violence (has been hit and pushed down the stairs by her brother) and is contemplating not seeing her family.. Apart from suggesting she speaks to the welfare officer and the student counsellor - i don't what i can do...It's hard to see a kid going thro this
