Wait What!?

Wikipedia Says

During a 1944 promotional tour of Liverpool, England, Louis (as a publicity stunt) actually signed for Liverpool Football Club as a player. The official club records still record him as being "on the books" and is therefore officially classed as having been a Liverpool player.

My Dad talks about seeing him box in an exhibition in Bank Park Warrington around that time. Think he came on a promotional and to see the GI's stationed at Burtonwood

Yep - 3rd Army airforce bomb group (B17's) were stationed at Burton wood, a training facility near Warrington, the Allied US run pre-D-Day DUKW testing facility was based at Fazakerly and their were American transport and coastal command pilots based in Liverpool bay - quite a lot in a smallish area.

The effect The Brown Bomber had on the Liverpool team

Shankly was a huge admirer of the Brown Bomber. "He read once that Joe Louis trained on steaks," said St John, through tears of mirth. "So that was it. On Fridays, we'd have steak. Saturday lunch, steak. Saturday night on the way back from the match, steak. When you left Liverpool you went vegetarian."

I think there were bout 100,000 at Burtonwood, which is an enormous number considering the size of Warrington.
